What is a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario?
If you’re confused about the differences between mental health professionals, you are not alone. There are so many designations for different types of therapists and it can feel confusing and difficult to keep it straight. Therapist, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, coach. It can get overwhelming. Still, it’s important to understand what each professional has to offer both to ensure you’re getting the right service and to avoid surprises with things like coverage and out-of-pocket costs.
In this article, I’ll be focusing on a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario. I will break down the following:

What Is a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario?
A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario is someone who is regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). An RP must have the following qualifications in order to be accepted into the CRPO:
- Complete an approved education program: RPs must complete a recognized Master’s level psychotherapy education that meets the CRPO’s requirements.
- Complete clinical training: Applicants must gain supervised clinical experience to develop the skills needed to provide safe and effective psychotherapy.
- Meet registration requirements: Applicants must satisfy the CRPO’s registration requirements, which can include demonstrating professional competency, meeting language requirements, and completing required documentation.
- Follow professional standards: Once registered, RPs are required to follow the CRPO’s professional standards, ethics, and regulations.
- Maintain their registration: Registered Psychotherapists must continue to meet the requirements of the CRPO to remain registered and practise psychotherapy in Ontario.
For clients, choosing a Registered Psychotherapist means working with a regulated healthcare professional who is accountable to a professional regulatory body. It can make you feel more confident and secure when looking for a therapist in Toronto or elsewhere in Ontario.
Registered Psychotherapist vs. Psychologist: What’s the Difference?
One of the most common questions I hear from clients is, “What’s the difference between a Registered Psychotherapist and a psychologist?”
The biggest difference comes down to their training, scope of practice, and the types of services they can provide. Both can provide psychotherapy, but psychologists typically have more extensive training in psychological assessment and diagnosis.
Registered Psychotherapists focus primarily on providing psychotherapy. They work with clients to understand their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, relationships and experiences and use different therapeutic approaches to help clients make changes. Psychologists can also provide psychotherapy, but they may provide psychological assessments and other services that fall within their scope of practice. Their services range from $220 to $350, and thorough assessments may cost more.
Neither professional is automatically “better” than the other. It really comes down to what you are looking for and what type of support would be the best fit for you. If you are primarily looking for talk therapy or ongoing support with things like anxiety, depression, relationships, stress, self-esteem or life transitions, an RP may be a good option. If you’re specifically looking for assessment and diagnosis, a psychologist may be a better option.

How Much Does Therapy Cost in Toronto?
Therapy costs in Toronto can vary quite a bit depending on the therapist, their experience, the length of the session and the type of service they provide.
For a typical individual therapy session with an RP, you can generally expect to pay somewhere in the range of $150 to $250 per session. Some therapists may charge less, while therapists with more experience or specialized training may charge more.
It’s also worth checking whether your therapist offers different session lengths or sliding-scale options. Some practices may have reduced-fee appointments available depending on their policies and availability.
Before booking your first appointment, I recommend asking about the session fee, cancellation policy and whether taxes are included. This can help avoid any surprises when it comes time to pay.
Does Insurance Cover Therapy in Ontario?
This is an important thing to consider, but the answer will vary. It all depends on your insurance plan. Psychotherapy provided by a Registered Psychotherapist is often covered by health benefits, but not every insurance plan provides coverage for RPs. Some plans may cover psychologists, social workers and psychotherapists separately, while others may have a combined annual limit.
OHIP generally does not cover private psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. However, some services provided through hospitals, community mental health programs or other publicly funded organizations may be covered. To learn more about OHIP-covered services, click here.
The best thing you can do is check your specific benefits plan before starting therapy. Look for coverage for “Registered Psychotherapist,” “psychotherapy” or “mental health services.” If you’re unsure, you can also contact your insurance provider directly and ask whether services provided by an RP are covered and what your annual maximum is.
How to Find a Registered Psychotherapist in Toronto
Finding a therapist can sometimes feel like a lot of work. There are so many options available, and finding someone who feels like the right fit is just as important as finding someone who has the right credentials. Some directories, like Psychology Today or Affordable Therapy Network can be helpful.
When looking for a Registered Psychotherapist in Toronto, I recommend starting with the issues you want support with. Are you looking for help with anxiety? Relationships? Stress? Self-esteem? Trauma? Life transitions? Knowing what you want to work on can help narrow down your options.
You can also look at the therapist’s education, experience, therapeutic approach and areas of specialization. Most importantly, consider whether you feel comfortable with their communication style and approach to therapy.
It’s completely okay to speak with a few therapists before deciding who you want to work with; it takes most people a few tries before they decide to work with one. Most offer a free consultation, and you don’t have to commit to the first therapist you speak with.
