Anxiety Therapy Toronto

Anxiety, like all emotions, is a normal reaction to stress and pressure. It’s not enjoyable but it only becomes a problem when our bodies or minds get stuck in that alert mode and your day-to-day becomes daunting.

Do you find yourself:

  • Continuously rehearsing the same conversations in your head?
  • Constantly thinking you’re going to fail at something (a social event, a presentation)?
  • Feeling nervous or panicked even when there doesn’t seem to be a reason for it?
  • Regularly cancelling or avoiding social experiences and events you actually want to attend?
  • Having difficulty making decisions because every choice feels high stakes, even when it’s not?
  • Feeling tense at the thought of new or challenging things, even if they “should” be easy?
  • Experiencing impending doom or dread?

Life shouldn’t feel like it’s just something you have to endure. Anxiety therapy can help you find the resources to alleviate yourself of that tension.

What is Anxiety Therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps you understand where your anxiety is coming from (the ‘why?’) and gives you the tools to respond in new ways (the ‘what now?’).

During session, we will work to:

  • Understand the patterns and triggers that cause you anxiety.
  • Learn practical skills to calm your body and nervous system.
  • Find alternatives to the unhelpful impulses you use to deal with anxious feelings (e.g., avoidance).
  • Learn to manage stress and tension.
  • Reconnect to the life you want to live.

I’ll create a therapy treatment plan that helps you alleviate your anxiety and feel more in control.

How Anxiety Therapy Can Help You

You’ll never get rid of anxiety as a whole, but anxiety therapy can help you manage symptoms of anxiety. Over time, you may notice:

  • Your mind feels calmer, and your body more relaxed
  • You’re overthinking less, and don’t find yourself in “spirals”
  • You build more confidence around decision making.
  • You’re better able to handle stress and feel more emotionally resilient
  • Your relationships become stronger and healthier
  • You develop a deeper connection with yourself and the present moment

Let’s work to manage our anxiety so we don’t feel completely consumed by it.

FAQs About Anxiety Therapy

Why do I feel anxious when nothing is wrong?

This is really common; it could be your brain responding to the past. When we’ve experienced intense difficulty, our brain and body’s alarm systems become more sensitive, even when there is no present danger.

Is anxiety treatable?

Yes, it definitely is. Tons of people experience relief from their anxiety through therapy.

Should I use therapy, medication, or both?

For some, just therapy is enough to help them manage their anxiety. For others, therapy and medication works best. I can support your therapy journey alongside your healthcare providers if needed, but it will always be a collaborative process, and you always make the final call. You’ll never be pressured to do anything you don’t want to do.

How many anxiety therapy sessions will I need?

I know this answer is annoying, but everyone is unique. A lot of people notice improvement in 4-12 sessions, while others choose or require longer-term support for deeper work. It depends on a variety of things, including the therapy approach and the nature of the anxiety (e.g., where it comes from, how intense it is). I’ll always try to be mindful of your time and resources when I build a treatment plan.

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

It really depends on who you are and how your anxiety shows up. CBT is the most commonly used treatment because of the short length of treatment, and the research behind it. However, if you’ve found CBT limiting in the past, experiential therapies (like somatic therapy or IFS) may be more useful.
